The existing power structures of colonialism harm many people around the world, even the Global North.
Its consequences go far beyond the direct effects. One of the major problems we face today is climate change.
Colonialism has contributed to the fact that industrialized countries today emit far more greenhouse gases than countries in the Global South. This is due to the structures of the capitalist economic system that still exists today. This system has exploited the resources of countries in the Global South and suppressed their industries - leading to an imbalance in terms of carbon footprint. This means that those countries most affected by the effects of climate change have contributed the least to causing it.
Even within individual countries, there are differences in carbon footprints that are directly related to colonialism. Climate change has devastating effects on local communities worldwide - but especially in those regions of the Global South.
Colonialism has a direct impact on how we deal with climate change - both globally and locally.
It is therefore up to all of us to act and ensure justice - so that all people are equally protected from the consequences of climate change.
